Kumiko is a traditional Japanese style of woodworking that utilizes precise cuts, angles and measurements to create intricate patterns without the use of nails. The process was often used for Shoji screens and wall dividers in Japanese culture.

I use a mix of hand and power tools to create the patterns you see here. Final grid pieces and infill patterns are assembled with a small amount of wood glue to ensure that the pieces remain during shipment.

Grids are made with half-lap and double half-lap joints to create the triangle pattern that the designs are made in. Basswood is the wood type used in the majority of the grid and infill patterns. All the strips are cut to approximately 1/8th of an inch. For many patterns, I have incorporated domestic and exotic wood species for pops of color, including Black Walnut, African Mahogany and Padauk (red colored).

For these minis, they are approximately 10in by 6in by 1in. Typically I use Black Walnut for the frames and a contrasting wood species for corner splines for frame strength. If you are interested in a mini with a different frame or paper backing, please reach out.

Wood Types:
